The psychologist Angeliki Bravou, a graduate of the Society of Cognitive Behavioral Studies, talks about the CBT intervention in smoking cessation. The talk begins by modifying myths that hold smokers captive to the unhealthiest behavior of choice and moves on to its harmful consequences and the beneficial effects of quitting. The speaker then explains the smoking behavior in CBT terms and analyzes the factors that maintain this behavior, and immediately after that presents the cessation methods. Finally, a comprehensive presentation of the CBT model of smoking cessation intervention is made, analyzing step-by-step the stages, strategies and techniques as well as possible inhibiting factors and obstacles to its implementation. At the end, the speaker makes useful points to prevent relapse and gives information on where to seek help in his attempt.
The speech was held as part of the series of lectures “Because mental health is just as important as physical health” co-organized by the Culture, Sports and Youth Organization of the Municipality of Athens with the Institute for Behavioral Research and Therapy (http://ibrt.gr/edu /node/618) and videotaped with permission from the blod.gr website (http://www.blod.gr) of the Bodosakis Foundation, within the framework of the Foundation’s primary goal of promoting Education in Greece and disseminating scientific knowledge through the use of modern technology.
